This is my dog Zoe. I adopted her from the Seattle Animal Shelter about
three years ago. She loves our daily three mile walk, but she also loves being
a couch potato. There are lots of good reasons to support the Shelter, but
as far as I'm concerned, Zoe's the only reason I need.
And this weekend, you can join me and The Mountain for the annual Furry 5K Fun Run and Walk. It's at Seward Park on Sunday morning, and if you like to walk, or run, if you
have a dog, if you just like dogs, if your dog likes to walk or run, if your
dog does tricks, or if you just want to pick up a :20 Funny CD, you should
be there with me. The event raises money for the Help the Animals Fund,
which provides veterinary care and supplies for sick, injured or abused orphaned shelter animals. When I adopted Zoe in 2005, she was a four year old stray who had just delivered puppies (which were nowhere to be found.)
She was skinny and scared and quite scruffy looking, with freakishly large nipples and patches of missing fur. But I saw something in her, and I like to think she saw something in me (but I'm probably imagining that.) Anyway, from my experience adopting Zoe, I could see how much compassion the people at the Seattle Animal Shelter have for the animals they take in -- and they take in nearly 8,000 a year. That's why I'm hosting the Furry 5K, and I hope you'll be there too. Believe me, when hundreds of dogs get together in one park, it's fun.
By the way, if your dog has special skills or talents, like a trick or an especially good howl, or if you and your dog resemble one another, we'll have prizes for that, too. We'll have a Mountain booth with :20 Funny CDs while they last. Here's the link if you want the details, and if you come by on Sunday, be sure to find me and introduce yourself -- and your dog!
